Children's Daily Programming for the 5 Weeks of Summer

We offer an inclusive environment for all families. Our family retreat creates a dynamic opportunity for families to take a step away from the daily routine. The kids can participate in our children's program (see below) or youth program (see here »), while parents have the choice of enrolling in a course (see here ») or simply enjoying Rest and Relaxation (see here »).

Our children and youth program provides an opportunity for young people to be part of a community that encourages and nurtures the development of Christian faith in a safe and fun environment. All of this takes place in the unique setting of Sorrento Centre and the beautiful Shuswap Lake.

KIDS AT SORRENTO CENTRE: SLIDESHOW

SCHEDULE

"Five Weeks of Summer" children and youth programs run in the mornings and evenings. This leaves the afternoons free for family topactivities. Afternoons are often occupied with naps, time at the beach, local attractions, or a visit to our farm.

PROGRAM

The children and youth programs are grouped according to age, providing activities and projects suitable to each level:

  • Kantakaye Kids is for children up to four years old. Our summer youth staff are trained to offer your youngest family members special care and attention. The Kantakaye Kids have a playground, sandbox, and fenced yard as well as many indoor activities and toys. Tactile activities that stimulate the senses are centered on early development, safe play, and experiencing God’s love in our everyday activities.
  • Orchard Youth is for all five- to thirteen-year-olds. This group of children and youth are based out of the orchard portables and break off into two groups based on age. We plan many high-energy activities for the Orchard Youth because they are the members of our community who are looking for maximum play! Our summer youth staff work to create diverse opportunities for Orchard Youth activities based on age, interest, and abilities. top
  • Generation Next is for all fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds (see here »)

ACTIVITIES

  • Outdoors Summers at Sorrento Centre call for us to spend time outside! Our programming unplugs from the technology of our world and allows us to spend time outdoors surrounded by the wonders of creation. Outdoor activities during a typical week include: beach time, water games, sports, wide games, hikes, and free play.
  • Arts and Music Arts, crafts, and music allow participants to creatively connect with God and their inner self. Our program engages in diverse artistic mediums including tie-dye, bead work, painting and sculpture. Theatrical elements including games, skits, much music making, and the sharing of song bring us all together.

FAITH

Faith is central within our programming. Each week’s program is planned around a theme and grounded in Scripture. We integrate themes into our daily activities in creative ways that are fun and engaging, allowing children and youth to explore their relationship with God as they feel comfortable. Faith is one of the links that ties our community together and we are dedicated to creating a safe place for young people to explore their faith through spiritual practices, discussion, activities, worship, and sharing.

NUTRITION

Our Family Retreat offers youth an opportunity to build on the life skill of healthy eating habits. Eating vegetables is the cool thing to do here at Sorrento Centre because we have our very own farm. Our dining hall specializes in healthy food for your family and we take pride in feeding your family healthy meals with produce topfresh from the farm. In addition to healthy meals, we also offer our youth and children’s program participants healthy snacks.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Community gatherings are important at Sorrento Centre. These gatherings include: daily worship (including a children- and youth-led service), variety night, campfire, water games, and the Friday closing Eucharist, garden party, and dance. These events bring our intergenerational community together and create memorable experiences for everyone to share.

STAFF

Our children and youth program is run by our summer youth staff who are trained and equipped at the beginning of the summer to meet the needs of the children and youth and carry out summer programming. We are privileged to have these amazing staff members come to us from across Canada. Our summer youth staff work alongside a qualified leadership team and is supported by all of the staff of Sorrento Centre. Our topgoal is to guide children and youth throughout the summer, providing leadership, support, and friendship.
