the Bethlehem Retreat Centre in Nanaimo, the Queenswood in Victoria

Quilting Week
April 18-24, 2010
Conquer Your Rulers!
with Dianne Jansson
Do you have a selection of rulers that you bought in a spurt of
enthusiasm and then relegated to a shelf in the corner of your sewing
area? Dust them off and bring them to class!
Learn how their correct use can benefit your quilt projects with
extra speed and accuracy. A series of blocks using various specialty
rulers will be provided. Others will be designed during the week to
include any rulers you bring with you. The blocks will be used to
create a sampler-style quilt. This course is a wonderful opportunity
to use up some of those scraps from your stash, as well as good way to
expand your piecing skills.
Dianne Jansson has an degree in Home Economics and taught
dressmaking for many years in Australia and Canada. The last 25 years
have seen Dianne’s focus change to quilting. Dianne believes that
quilting is meant to be a pleasurable activity, and encourages her
students to adapt designs to suit their personal needs.

“Stars
About Town” and “Crazy Quilt Stars”
with Lynn Knox

“Stars About Town” (bottom left) is is an awesome quilt made
“scrappy” or with just a few fabrics.
The
whole quilt is set on point with an incorporated border.
Crazy quilts were first seen in the US in the late 1800s and early
1900s. Traditionally they were made with bits and pieces of tapestry,
silk, satin and other fancy fabrics. “Crazy Quilt Stars” (bottom
right) is an updated version that can be made with traditional fabrics
or today’s beautiful cottons. We will look at doing your stitches by
hand or by machine. You can choose to make one quilt or start both
quilts. We’ll send you the supply list for both quilts, and you can
choose.
Lynn Knox was born and raised in Vernon and has been
quilting for twenty years. She has been teaching for six years at
Pleasant Valley Quilting and has developed her own line of patterns.

Associates Work and Study Week
May 2-8 2010
Angels in the Attic
with Nancy Scott
…"in the Book of Revelation there are seven angels hanging around:
trees full of angels, gift giving angels from a gift giving God." –
Sister Doreen McGuff SSJD
Twice a year - in the spring and the fall - the Associates of
Sorrento Centre have an opportunity to come together to worship,
study, work and pray.
The Spring Associates’ Week is always one of the most special times
of the Sorrento year. Our work will focus on preparing the site for
the coming season. This year, study will be led by Nancy Scott.
Here we are introduced to a portrait - the unchanging realities
upon which our faith relies in any period of history. The challenge
and the gift is learning to see the holy in the ordinary. Holiness
comes wrapped in the ordinary. There are burning bushes all around.
Every tree is full of angels. Hidden beauty is waiting, life wants to
lead us into the ordinary, to the angels, to God.”
Nancy Scott is a graduate of the Education for Ministry
Program and the Pacific Jubilee Program in Spiritual Direction. She
is an Oblate with the Sisters of St John the Divine.

Young Sojourners’ Weekend
May 7-9, 2010
Jesus’
Gang
with Phil Colvin
Teenage fishermen, thugs, tax collectors and geeks…
When Jesus wandered into town and introduced his gang of disciples,
it must have been quite a shock to people who were expecting a group
of old, religious leaders!
This May, if you’re between 14 and 25, come be part of our posse at
Sorrento Centre! We’ll be having a great time playing and hanging out.
And, like Jesus’ disciples, we’ll be working together building the
community of God… in this case by helping with work projects around
the centre. We will also be asking some hard questions.
We’ll ask why Jesus made such strange choices to be his closest
friends and the people to build his church, and we’ll find out what
plans he might have for us, his new gang, in 2010 and beyond!
Course Fee: By Donation
Chaplain for the week: Dan Hines
Dan Hines is an experienced youth leader and is currently a
ministry developer and priest in The Anglican Parishes of the Central
Interior based in Kamloops, BC.
