Models of the Emerging
Church
with Ray Simpson
How
can values such as integrity, respect and unconditional love become
features of the emerging church?
This course helps us look at the ways in which the major shifts
in our culture can help us discover new ways of doing church.
Through a combination of lectures and interactive exercises Ray
Simpson will guide participants as they explore such issues as what
the retreating church needs to discard and what the emerging church
needs to do in order to turn congregations into communities and
church buildings into spiritual homes.
Concepts like “Rhythm, Roots and Relationships” and natural
growth and the organic weaving together of Christianity’s separate
strands will be explored and analyzed.
Ray Simpson is the founding Guardian of the International
C ommunity of Aidan and Hilda and the principal tutor of its Celtic
Christian Studies programme on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.. An
Anglican priest, he is a prolific author, whose books have sold over
100,000 copies since his Exploring Celtic Spirituality was first
published in 1995

Prayer:
Finding Our Heart’s True Home
with Sarah Donnelly
What
is prayer? How are we invited to pray? How do we make sense of
prayers that are unanswered?
Sarah Donnelly invites participants to reflect on the many ways
we pray in our lives, whether our prayers be as honest and
forthright as Tevye singing “If I Were a Rich Man” in “Fiddler On
The Roof” or as heart wrenching and sincere as when we pray for a
loved one who is desperately ill. We will explore several different
styles of prayer including conversations, Eucharistic prayers and
using the labyrinth as a means of prayer.
Sarah Donnelly received her undergraduate degree from the
University of Waterloo and her Masters of Divinity from St. Peter’s
Seminary (University of Western Ontario). She continues to offer
workshops, retreats, spiritual direction, funerals and grief support
to the ecumenical Christian community on Vancouver Island,
throughout western Canada, She lives in Cowichan Bay, BC.

The Hope of Christ
with Dan Meakes

What are the ties that bind Anglicans together? In the midst of
divisions and debates, what does it mean to be catholic?
This course will explore the history of the church and the many
gospels and interpretations of Jesus. Also, we will look at the
diverse leadership styles and regional differences in the founding
of the church in western Canada. We will be in search of the hope,
often missed in the age of empires.
There will be an opportunity to forward to the national church
our personal and group hopes for the future. This will be a time of
reaffirmation of the Christ that binds us together. In preparation
for this course Dan will be interviewing west coast bishops
concerning the future unity of the church.
Dan Meakes is a retired priest and pastor. He has founded
several educational programs and institutions and is a former
Executive Director of Sorrento Centre. Prior to retirement he spent
seven years as a priest in the inner-city parish of St. John the
Evangelist in North Vancouver. There he developed a different
approach to Christian community renewal that emphasizes the common
nature of faith.

Spirit in Fibre:
Liturgical Fibre Art
with Kathy Kinsella
Come
and join us for a few beautiful June days to explore ways to add
interest and impact to banners, altar hangings or vestments.
We will touch on basic design and construction and then explore
ways to embellish. Be prepared to play with different fibres,
textile paints and construction techniques . . . and then add more
layers and embellishments . . . and then add even more interest with
yarns and cords and thread and beads. You will come away from this
course bursting with ideas to be explored further. We will create
samples of techniques for your future reference, but not a complete
banner. Come with a sense of adventure and enthusiasm for
the journey.
Kathy Kinsella is a textile artist who resides in Blind
Bay, BC. Her work includes landscapes that capture the essence of
the Shuswap, work with a whimsical flair, as well as liturgical
fibre art. Prior to retiring to the world of
fibre art, Kathy worked for the Anglican Church for twenty years –
in a parish, at the diocesan level and then at Sorrento Centre.
A sewing machine and basic supplies are required; a kit will be
provided with additional specialty fabrics and embellishments at a
cost of $35 per student. This course assumes that you have basic
sewing skills – if you are interested and adventuresome but are a
non-sewer, please contact the course leader before registering.
Course fee: $50 supplies: $35
