Theological Shifts, Rumblings, and Shake-Ups in the 21st Century
with Anna Greenwood-Lee and Christine Conkin
WE WILL START WITH THE PREMISE OUTLINED BY PHYLLIS TICKLE in her book The Great Emergence that the Church and society today are undergoing a shift of the size and significance which we have not seen since the Reformation.
We will then talk about some of the changes already happening and some that might be coming. We’ll look at writings and videos from some of the biggest voices on the religious landscape today, including
- Richard Rohr
- Desmond Tutu
- Rob Bell
- Nadia Boltz-Weaver
- Peter Rollins
- Rachel Held Evans
- Brian McLaren
- Cynthia Bourgeault
- Ilia Delio
- Ken Wilbur
We’ll talk about what these shifts and changes might mean to how we read and understand the Bible, to how we understand the Atonement, and to how we relate to people of other faiths and of no faith.
This is a course for the theologically well-read, for those who have not read theology for a long time, and for those who have not read it at all.
ANNA GREENWOOD-LEE is the Rector of St. Laurence Anglican Church, Calgary and the Director of the Wisdom Centre - www.wisdomcentre.ca »
The Wisdom Centre seeks to renew and revitalize corporate and individual spirituality in the 21st century. Based in Calgary, the Wisdom Centre hosts speakers, retreats, and studies for people seeking to make sense of the shifting spiritual landscape of the 21st century and has been honoured to welcome such guests as Diana Butler Bass, Peter Rollins, Barbara Brown Taylor, and Cynthia Bourgeault.
Through her work both at St. Laurence and with the Wisdom Centre Anna is clear that a new thing is happening and that the Church needs to be awake to how God is calling it to shift and adapt. Anna earned her M.Div from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA and was ordained in 2000. She has served parishes in both Calgary and Toronto. She is married to James and has two school-aged children.
CHRISTINE CONKIN has served in 3 Calgary parishes, including becoming rector of St. Andrew’s in 2014. She was ordained in 2006 after completing an Mdiv at Vancouver School of Theology and completed a Master of Theology in bible in 2013. Her interest in the transformation of the church today, in both belief and practice, is informed by her biblical work about how the ancient Israelites transformed into the Jewish community. Christine’s spiritual life is grounded in dance and the many outdoor activities she loves.
