EASTER RETREAT
Living our Faith in the Public Square:
The Challenge for Twenty-First Century Christians
with John Chapman

ARCHBISHOP ROWAN WILLIAMS suggests that secularism as it is popularly understood has failed. “We may not live in a theocratic state, but the global political agenda is being set by the concerns of religious communities . . . .”

How, then, might we, as followers of Jesus committed to the paschal mystery, enliven our spiritual and religious imagination so that our prayerful presence before God may be faithful to God, faithful to one another and faithful to our church in these new times?

What do these new days call us to do different from that of previous generations? What have two centuries taught us that is timeless for those born in the waters of Baptism?

Our time together will include prayerful listening, challenging conversation, and deep silence.

John ChapmanJOHN CHAPMAN, Bishop of Ottawa, works toward a renewed and renewing church and mission that is nimble, and responsive to today’s unique times.

He would strongly suggest, “While these are extremely exciting and hopeful times, unlike our parents’ generation, we do not have as our example and guide the teachings of our grandmothers and grandfathers.

Our context for prayer and longing for God, mission, story-telling, and justice seeking is so unlike that of any generation before us, it can be said we are witnessing Jesus in a new time.”
