Life Review:
Discovering Your Own Story
with Marv Westwood

Marv WestwoodWhat is The Guided Autobiography approach to Life Review?

Briefly stated, The Life Review Program is designed to help participants understand their life history in such a way as to better enable them to chart their futures. It is only by understanding where we have come from and what we have done that we can effectively plan for where we are going; in other words – using the past to guide the future. In reviewing their life paths, participants become aware of key events which shaped who they are today, how they made decisions or life choices, responded to and overcame challenges, coped with losses, identified accomplishments, and managed life achievements. Participants will work in small groups of six, each with their own facilitator.

More specifically, according to J.E. Birren and D. Deutchman, Guided Autobiography “is a semi-structured, topical, group approach to the life review. It is an educational process of bringing one’s understanding of the past into the present. An autobiography is a story of a life, the explanation or interpretation of this life by the individual who has lived it.” There will be three group facilitators assisting in the course.

MARV WESTWOOD PhD is a professor in the Counselling Psychology Program at U.B.C. and an Associate Member in the Faculty of Medicine. He is also a member of Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver. Marv has developed several personal development programs for people across a wide range of groups (helping professionals, nurses, physicians, soldiers, clergy, etc.) using Guided Autobiography and group-based learning approaches. His research and teaching focus areas have been invited presentations at numerous national and international conferences. Prior to coming to U.B.C., Marv taught at St. Francis University and McGill University.

Marv Westwood is assisted in this workshop by two other facilitators; Hilary Pearson and Stu Hoover. Both have expertise in the area of group and narrative life stories.
