Healing Families:
Courage and Faith in Challenging Times
with Diane Marshall

Diane MarshallFamilies today face a multitude of complex challenges: time stress, overwork, and burnout; racism, sexism, and homophobia; physical illness and disability; mental illness; accidents and trauma; substance abuse and sexual addictions; marital breakup and child custody issues.

Most conflicts in the family are rooted in communication breakdowns. One of the most serious factors is the mismanagement of anger: if physical, verbal or emotional abuse prevails in a family, then communication is severely damaged. Such roots of conflict can result in relationships fraught with tension, where humility and gentleness, patience and forbearance are not practiced, and love is wounded.

During this course family therapist Diane Marshall will help participants look together at our Christian calling to be peacemakers whenever possible in our families. Peacemaking is not avoidance of conflict, it is engaging with conflict in order to seek understanding and just relations.

DIANE MARSHALL is a registered marriage and family therapist, in practice since 1976, and director of Toronto’s Institute of Family Living. She trains therapists in immigrant communities, consults to Christian ministries and social justice organizations, and has served on human life task forces for the Anglican Church of Canada. She has been an expert witness at Senate hearings and given briefs to Royal Commissions on family issues such as marriage, divorce, child support, new reproductive technologies, and poverty and families. As a Board member of L’Arche Toronto, she has an ongoing interest in the needs of people with intellectual and physical disabilities. She consults to Romero House and the Lighthouse, both serving refugees.
