Worship & Music: Week 4
with Sherman Hesselgrave

Sherman HesselgraveSHERMAN HESSELGRAVE has been the incumbent of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto, Ontario [website] since June of 2008. His passion for church music began in East Africa, where his Lutheran missionary father assembled a pipe organ donated by a German mission society. He prepared for a career as an academic music librarian with graduate degrees in library science and musicology before being called to holy orders. He served as a priest and musician in the Pacific Northwest for more than 20 years before moving to Toronto. He has composed and arranged music for worship since his early years as a church musician.

Sorrento Morning Prayer

Sorrento Morning Prayer, which was written and composed by Sherman Hesselgrave,
will be introduced in week 4 . It was inspired in part by Marty Haugen’s popular Holden Evening Prayer, written for the Holden Village community on Lake Chelan, Washington. Its character is eclectic, drawing on imagery and language from the Shuswap (Secwepemc) and other creation-centric traditions, and is designed to be accompanied by a diverse combination of instruments.
