Prayer Cycles:
A Week of Cycle Tours in the Shuswap
with Phil McIntyre-Paul
“To everything turn, turn, turn. . .” – The Book of Ecclesiastes
Discover the Shuswap by pedal this summer. Five bicycle daytrips invite cyclists to immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape of farmlands, forests, mountains, and rivers. A simple cycle of contemplative reflection and sharing along the way invites participants to consider how the daily cadence of our lives is nothing less than an invitation to let the journey blur the boundaries between outer and inner landscapes.
Difficulty/Prerequisites: Moderate +. Participants must have their own bicycles in good repair and be comfortable cycle touring on rural roads. Riding pace will be relaxed around 15 – 20 km/hour, but participants should be prepared for full days and rolling terrain with short sections of sustained uphill.
Details: A mandatory drop-in bike inspection will take place Sunday afternoon during registration. Departure will begin each day at 9:45 am from Sorrento Centre (with the option of an earlier start on one of the days), and return to the Centre by 5:00 pm. Evenings are left open for rest and free time. Wednesday will be a shorter trip to provide R&R time in the afternoon. Transportation to the cycle tour route each day will be organized by carpool, with a trailer for bike transport. Participants are expected to provide and carry their own personal gear including road worthy bicycle in good repair, CSA approved helmet, water, lunch, and tire repair kit. Contact Sorrento Centre for the recommended equipment list for this program. (Participants with children should enquire about extended afternoon childcare options by calling the Sorrento Centre office.)
