Landscape as Inspiration: A Photographic Adventure
with Sarah Crawley

Sarah CrawleyLast summer Winnipeg photographer Sarah Crawley taught a popular “hands-on nature-based photography course” at Sorrento Centre to rave reviews. Sarah returns in 2012 with another fun, hands-on, beginner to mid-level course focusing on landscape photography. A combination of slide lectures, critiques and shooting assignments will encourage and challenge participants to photographically explore the landscape both natural and man-made, taking full advantage of the beauty of the Shuswap.

A meditative and slow approach will be applied to group shooting sessions in the ‘field’, while classroom sessions will provide the tools necessary for participants to gain more control over the technical and creative image making process. Regular viewing of each other’s images will encourage experimentation and creativity.

Note: Participants should have a digital camera, preferably one that can be operated in a manual mode (the camera should have manual settings for aperture and shutter-speed even if the participant does not know how to use them yet). Participants should bring all the camera accessories they think they will need – batteries, memory cards, tripod, lenses, cables, etc. If possible participants should bring a laptop computer and imaging software if they have it, also a card reader if they use one

SARAH CRAWLEY is a visual artist who lives and works in Winnipeg. In her photo-based art practice she explores aspects of memory, identity and non-verbal communication and is interested in things made or done by hand. Her most recent work explores the landscape’s impact on identity. Sarah has exhibited across Canada in solo and group shows as well as internationally. A recipient of many grants and awards, she enjoys sharing her passion for photography through teaching and mentoring and is an active member of the visual art community in Winnipeg. Sarah has recently completed a community public art project, which involved working for two years with recent immigrants from Eritrea to create a photographic exhibition.
