Exploring the World of Autism Spectrum Disorders
with Alice Prichard
The topic of autism – or Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) – seems to pop up everywhere in the media these days. We have all seen autism depicted in the media, whether in a magazine article on the latest cure for autism, a movie portraying an “autistic savant,” or a documentary describing high functioning adults with Asperger’s.
Have you ever wondered about the truth of what you have been reading and seeing in the news? This workshop focuses on some of the big questions surrounding this subject, such as:
- Do vaccines cause autism?
- What does the research say about intervention?
- What are the strengths of people with ASDs?
- How does autism impact the family?
This interactive workshop will address these questions through thought-provoking discussions and activities which examine how autism is portrayed in the media. No prior knowledge on this topic or personal experience with people with autism is necessary to participate.
ALICE PRICHARD is a Registered Provisional Psychologist at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in the Children’s Day Treatment Program. She has been working with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) for over 10 years, providing both assessment and treatment. While completing her Ph.D. in Clinical-Developmental Psychology at York University in Toronto, Ontario, she was involved in research projects examining the impact of specialized treatments for young children with ASD and the co-occurrence of ASD and other mental health concerns in adults. Alice has led workshops about ASD both nationally and internationally.
