Young Sojourners: Elemental Peace
with Andrew Halladay and David Taylor

Andrew Halladay and David TaylorFire, Water, Wind, and Dirt: God has come to show us peace.

Everyone knows that fire is hot, water is wet, air is invisible, dirt is dirty, and peace is a good thing. It’s a no-brainer. All of these things contribute to our wellbeing and bring us life. But sometimes fire burns out of control, water floods, air is poison, dirt shakes, and the quest for peace involves war. These very same life-giving elements also bring death and destruction.

In this course aimed at young people between the ages of 15 and 25, Andrew and David want to explore God’s presence in everything around us: the good, the bad, and the elemental ugly. What do we read about fire and water and wind and dirt in the Bible? What do we know about fire and water and wind and dirt from experience?

We will explore creation and the act of creating; we will look and see where God might be found in nature and in so-called ‘natural disasters’; we will try to figure out what role God plays in the environment and in the environmental movement; we will ask how much control human beings have over the elements and how much control God has over the elements. And most of all, we will spend time working with the elements in the beautiful setting at Sorrento as we help in the spring to prepare the Centre to receive guests in the summer.

ANDREW HALLADAY (above right) has worked as a priest in the Diocese of BC and in APCI, and is currently employed as the Family Ministries Pastor at St. Laurence, Coquitlam, British Columbia, in the Diocese of New Westminster. Andrew has a passion for all things liturgical and, as a musical theatre enthusiast, loves employing music, movement, and drama in worship and in life. In 2012, he and David Taylor directed a production of the musical Godspell, presented on Pentecost weekend at Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver.

DAVID TAYLOR (above left) is a priest in the Anglican Church who brings skills of music and liturgical innovation to worship. He has experience in offering contemporary worship for youth and young people that brings together the new cultures of the youth and the beloved traditions of our branch of the Tree of Life.
